Local Timber from Our Tree Surgery Work
Humber Logs is part of Yorkshire Tree Surgery. The timber used to produce your logs comes from the tree surgery work carried out by our team across Hull, Holderness and East Yorkshire.
We do not buy in logs or cordwood from other suppliers to process.
Trees are not removed simply to create firewood. The timber comes from tree surgery jobs that already need to be completed for reasons such as safety, tree health, site clearance or garden management.
Instead of allowing useful timber to go to waste, suitable material is separated and processed into firewood.
This means you know where your logs have come from and you are supporting a local East Yorkshire business.
Making Better Use of Every Tree
What happens to the timber after a tree surgery job has been completed?
Suitable larger pieces can be processed into logs. Other material can be turned into woodchip and used in different ways. Our aim is to make productive use of as much of the material created through our tree surgery business as possible.
The woodchip we produce is used as a bio product to help fuel the biomass boiler that creates heat for our kiln. This allows one part of the tree surgery material to help dry another.
It also reduces the need to transport timber over long distances or buy in firewood from other parts of the country.
Processing the Logs Before your logs can be dried, the suitable timber is cut and split into usable pieces.
Log size can make a big difference when you are trying to light and manage your fire. Logs that are too large may be difficult to fit into smaller stoves, while bags containing too many tiny pieces may not offer the quality or value you expected.
We have improved our processing methods to produce a more consistent range of usable log sizes.
This helps give you logs that are practical to handle, store and place in your wood burner, stove or open fire.
Kiln Dried on Our Own Site
Once the logs have been processed, they are dried in our kiln on our own East Yorkshire site.
Kiln drying uses controlled heat to remove moisture from the wood. This gives a more reliable result than leaving logs exposed to changing weather conditions.
Why does the moisture level matter?
When logs contain too much moisture, much of the fire’s energy is used to remove the water inside the wood. This can make the logs difficult to light and can lead to more smoke and less useful heat.
Screened Before Bagging
Drying the logs is not the final stage. All our logs are screened before they are placed into bags. Screening helps remove smaller pieces, loose bark and other fine material created during processing.
Why is this important? Without screening, part of the space inside a bag may be taken up by small pieces and loose material that you may not want to burn.
By screening the logs, we can provide a cleaner and more consistent product with a higher proportion of useful firewood.
This also makes the bags easier to unload, store and handle at your property.
Bagged and Ready for Local Delivery
After screening, the logs are placed into bags ready for delivery.
We clearly state the volume of the bags available, helping you understand what you are ordering. This is more useful than unclear descriptions such as a “bulk bag” or “ton bag”, which can refer to several different sizes.
Your logs can then be delivered by our own team across Hull, Holderness and East Yorkshire.
Our delivery vehicle includes a crane, allowing us to position the bags carefully where access and ground conditions allow.
